We are exploding into a GREAT summer at ACE this year!
Ranked by Northern Virginia Magazine among the Best Summer Camps in
Northern Virginia, ACE is experiencing another exciting summer and we
hope you will join us!
This summer we have headed into the Crazy Scientist’s laboratory for fun and
learning - where each week will be devoted to a different branch of science.
Campers are doing hands-on science experiments and activities as we learn
about the world around us and how it works.
At ACE Summer Camp there are a few things that set us apart from other summer camps in our area. We offer academics and an abundance of playtime during the day along with two recess times. Our academics include math and reading in the classroom on the appropriate grade level that each camper is in. All campers are also experiencing a Learning Lab time where we are having hands on fun with crazy science in STEAM activities.
Take a look at our first two weeks of summer camp!
Week One: We began our study of Crazy Science in Steam with Physics. Campers did a modified Fluor Challenge where the campers built ball launchers and catchers. We had the opportunity to use our knowledge of the laws of motion as we tried to create ball launchers that would land the ball in a designated “catcher” container. We then switched gears and looked at how forces affect cars. We built our own cars and learned about the importance of a bumper, along with testing the effect of friction on cars’ speed. On Wednesday we built our own models of a DaVinci parachute. We also learned about how some plastics shrink when they are heated, and we made some cool Shrinky plastic jewelry. We finished out the week by making some thaumatropes which trick our brains into thinking there is only one image when there actually are two!
Week Two: We focused on Chemistry this week. Starting off the week we learned about the three common states of matter - solid, liquid and gas. Making root beer floats we could observe all three states at the same time. We also learned about how matter can have physical changes, and what makes popcorn pop. Tuesday was filled with fizzy science as we did experiments to determine whether changes we observed in substances were physical or chemical changes. Wednesday we learned about solubility and we set up an experiment to grow crystals. Thursday we made some amazing art with sharpies and alcohol. Friday we finished out the week with a yummy spherification experiment where we were able to change liquid juice into juicy, edible spheres.
Join us for an out of this world summer of STEAM and see why ACE is the place to be for summer fun! Don’t miss out on the fun! Space is limited, so please register today.
